SDCC 2013: VIZ Media Panel

VIZ media is one of the larger anime and manga houses in attendance of this year's Comic Con, and as such they had several new wares to show off both on the show floor and behind closed doors in their panel.

The studio will be bringing back several old classics in a new publishing effort to put more emphasis on the history of the studio and their works. To that end, 'Ranma 1/2' will be reprinted, and in the original Japanese right-to-left format. The original manga was printed in American left-to-right.

'DragonBall Z' will also be reprinted, but this time in color. Each panel will be remastered to exude life and color.

VIZ property 'All You Need is Kill' is in the process of being turned into a motion picture. The film will be re-titled 'Edge of Tomorrow,' and will star Tom Cruise. The movie is currently set for a May 2014 release, which puts it up against 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' in the box office.

VIZ's novels will also be getting a shot in the arm thanks to a re-translation of 'Battle Royale,' one of the studio's most iconic and notable works. A new cover will accompany this new version of the novel.

VIZ is getting into the digital manga and anime market in a big way. Their e-Reader, iOS and Android app allows users to purchase manga digitally to read on the go. As the panelists pointed out, this also has the benefit of distracting onlookers from the fact that you might be reading adult manga.

...Oh, neat, I guess.

VIZ will be expanding their Manga Mondays sales, and converting them to a new 'Manga Madness' sale that continues all week. These sales will primarily encompass Volumes 1 and 2 of a series in an effort to make the barrier to entry lower for new fans.

Finally, I'd be remiss to cover VIZ media without also mentioning their anime channel app, Neon Alley. This app has been available for the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 for a bit, and streams anime much like a television network would. Each week they focus on a new release, while streaming old classics and new favorites as well. Even the commercials are all about anime.

There is no on-demand functionality built in to Neon Alley, but one is in the works. Also, for the first time at the San Diego Comic Con, VIZ announced that Neon Alley will be available soon for PC and Mac.
