Monolith Soft's Mysterious 'Project X' Looks An Awful Lot Like Xenoblade Chronicles 2

Last night's Nintendo Direct seminar turned out to be rife with Wii U announcements and trailers. It's safe to say that we were thoroughly impressed by the lineup on display last night, but by far the biggest reveal was that of Monolith Software's next project, simply titled X. This open-world RPG features some of the most advanced visuals we've seen on a Nintendo platform, and pits players against massive creatures both on foot and in a sweet mech suit.
From the style of the trailer to the gameplay on display to the mysterious codename, everything about this project screams Xenoblade Chronicles 2. And that's a very, very good thing. Even at this early stage the game is showing clear promise, both in its stunning visual design and in its clearly flexible gameplay. The lead character is seen dashing about the plains with a large sword before dispensing some justice with a lock-on, multi-fire cannon. And then there's the aforementioned mech suit, which allows the protagonist to take on screen-filling enemies.
But don't take our word for it. Check out the extremely promising footage below, and console yourself with the fact that you totally have to buy a Wii U now. Let's just hope we don't have to stage a petition to get this one to North America.
