Walk as the Dragonborn - A review of Skyrim

System: Xbox 360/Playstation 3/PC
Title: Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Publisher: Bethesda
Circa: 2011

Intro
The latest entry in the Elder Scrolls series starts things big, literally. While not a direct sequel, we are back in Tamriel and given the vast realm of Skyrim to explore. This

Story
Over 200 years since the events the events Oblivion. You start as a prisoner being taken in to be executed with a number of Stormcloaks. As you are taken to the Headman's block a dragon descends on the prison and gives you a chance to escape. From here it is all about the choices you make that will shape the course of the game for you.

You later learn you are the first of the Dragonborn. This gives you an edge being the first Dragonborn in centuries. You will also find over time that the story will vary from playthrough to playthrough all based on the choices you make and what you do.

Gameplay
You will find that the character you create will reflect what you use the most. If you sell a lot of items and work through social challenges you will find you have a stronger social character. If you use a variety of spells you will find the path of the Mage before you. If you sneak and steal you will find yourself running from the law but able to send out death from the shadows.

As your character levels up you will be able to choose perks. These help directly shape the character that you want. Which ones available to you will be determined by your skill ranks. If you do not have the skill needed you can always save it for later. There is no limit to how many you can store up.

Controls
While the game seems complex it has been made very simple to control. You will be able to run, jump, manage inventory and everything else very easily. This is perhaps one of the easiest RPGs to do inventory management in.

Graphics
This game is graphically astounding. As you wander the realm of Skyrim you see snow flakes flutter by you, leaves move in the air and butterflies flyby.

Sound Effects & Music
The sounds of the world are well executed. You can track prey fairly well from its jumping around.

The music finds its way elegantly into the game. It comes in when you find yourself wandering the wilds, in town or in a fight. The score scales well with what you find yourself against. The boss theme is great and taking on a dragon is something else.

Summary/Author’s Take
It is a long time between games like this. You find a game that you can enjoy for hours on end and one that shapes to your choices. It is something to play and enjoy. Even if you are just wandering around you will find a lot to do and there is plenty to discover as you transverse Skyrim.
