Nintendo Direct E3 2021 Presentation Summary

We have reached the Big N's E3 presentation for 2021. There's always a lot they unveil and this year has been no exception. Mind COVID-19 likely slowed things down a little.

Starting the whole thing was Shinya Takahashi and Yoshiaki Koizumi. They remarked that the Switch has been out for 5 years now and is offering a wide variety of games. These are from both Nintendo and many of their partnered publishers.

The first trailer was a cinematic. A famous Tekken scene recreated with Kazuya, who is the next Ultimate Smash Fighter! Much like Street Fighter's Ryu, he has combos pulling from his origins as a Fighter in Tekken. He will also have his famous Devil Gene Mode, much like others. We got to get an idea of how he fought just from this, being a more combo-based character. It looks like his father, Hatachi, will be in the stage at least (also Kazuya was flaunted by Kirby). Finally, Masahiro Sakuri came on after that to talk about it after. He to us he'll go into the details at a later date. Instead we got a montage of the various moves Kazuya has. The strong combo game was VERY apparent. Kazuya is a very different sort of character in terms of a move pool. We'll get the full presentation for Kazuya on June, 26th, 2021.

Next we got a selection of games coming to the Switch. The first was a different version of Life is Strange trailer. This one showed the central characters to the original Life is Strange as well as Life is Strange: True Colors. This was a quick way to announce both the Remaster and True Colors are comign to the Switch. True Colors will be launching on the Switch September 10th, 2021. The Remastered Collection will be available later this year.

Next is the new Guardians of the Galaxy coming from Square Enix. October 26th, 2021. Worms Rumble was the next game announced, launching June 26th, 2021. There will be a unique stage and a free DLC costume avilable. Worms Rumble is already available for pre-order through the e-Shop. After Worms was Astra Ascending. In a hand-painted world, this game has you controlling demi-gods to save the realm. Build up a team using a variety of classes and participate in turn-based combat. This game looks very good (and very much reminds me of Vanillaware's astetic). It launches September 30th, 2021. Two Point Campus was shown next. Time to build and run your own university. Design it to your hearts content when it launches next year. After that, a series celebrating its 20th was next, Super Monkey Ball! After a montage of the previous games, we got to the next one, Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania. There are also remastered versions of the older games coming or mixed in. It wasn't very clear from this presentation.

Next was something of a surprise with Mario Party Superstars. This one is a mix of classic, fan-favorite Mario Party mini-games, as well as 4 boards returning from the N64 era. 2 of the boards were revealed, Peach's Birthday Cake and Space Land. Each board has a number of zany events. Plenty of more mini-games await with over 100 of them from the Mario Party library. Additionally, all these game modes will be working with online play! It will also support saving your game, allowing for the whole group to actually take a break before resuming the festivities. Plus, there will be stickers that can freely be used to communicate with other party-goers both locally and online. This game launches October 29th, 2021. It's already available for pre-order through the e-shop.

Before the next trailer, the host was clear that studios were hard at work on Metriod Prime 4. But first, we got a trailer for Metroid 5. Samus very much has an evolved Fusion suit. It has taken on a very futuristic stryle for this. The gameplay we saw showed the traditional 2d appear. And the subtitle was revealed, “Dread”. This is thought dead game coming back. It looks to feature many of the improvements from the Samus Returns remake on 3DS. The game looks to release on October 8th, 2021. It has been 19 years since the last new game in the series. It will be released with a pair of Amiibo, of Samus and the Robot shown, EMMI.

Dragonball Karakot and A New Power Awakens. It will be going through the entirity of the Z story lines. There is a lot to explore throughout the world of Dragonball. This launches September 24th, 2021.

Mario Golf Super Rush was shown next. We got to see Standard Golf, Speed Golf, Battle Golf, Golf Adventure. There were Free Updates also announced, but no real details about it. This game comes out June 25, 2021.

After a long break, the next game was shown to be part of the WarioWare company. The trailer was done with Wario narrating it. It looks to have all the charm and delightful micro-games. From there, the next game was Shin Megami Tensei V. A normal high school student is pulled through into a post-apocayltic Toyko to fight the angels and demons. Fused with a mysterious benefactor, the student can now fight back. There will be the chance to talk with the demons and recruit them into your party as an ally. This game features the demon fusion that the series is famous for. This game releases on November 12th, 2021. Pre-orders for the physical release being June 21st.

This game releases later this year. While it is bringing an older game forward, the Fatal Frame series is renowned. It should be a scary time.

Next was a collection of games being released either soon or today (following the announcements). First was Doom Eternal: Ancient Gods Part 1. The Doom Slayer takes on greater challenges and fights for the cosmos. This game releases on the Switch later today. Tony Hawk's Pro-Skater 1+2 finally made its way to the Switch! The last announcement was added into the Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity expansion pass. Link is getting a few new weapons. The player looks to gain control of one of the Ancient Guardians. Additionally, Zelda was shown on the Mastercycle added into Breath of the Wild. This expansion, Wave 1 - Pulse of the Ancients will be available June 18th, 2021 via the e-Shop. It will be adding in the Battle-Tested Gaurdian, the Flails as a new weapon type for Link, The Mastercycle as a weapon for Zelda, the Apocalyptic Difficulty level, new challenges in the Royal Lab, and more challenging enemies added to the battlefield. Later this year, Wave 2 – Guardian of Remembrance launches. New character vignettes will be added in. New stages are coming as well as an expanded roster and new battle skills for the existing characters. Also, by purchasing this, Link will get a new costume and weapon, the Prototype Ancient Gear and Prototype Ancient Sword. Eiji Aonuma came on next, talking about the trailer we just saw. He was then talking about the Skyward Sword HD Remastered. It is the earliest entry into the Zelda series, chronologically at this point. The Switch can either handle the game with the Joy-Cons or by flicking the thumbsticks in handheld mode. This will be released July 16th, 2021.

Next, he pulled out a Game and Watch that will have 3 games from the Zelda series to help celebrate its 35th anniversery. This will have The Legend of Zelda, Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link, and the original Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening from the Gameboy. It will also have a special version of the Game and Watch title, Vermin, which has Link as the player character. There will also be a playable clock based on the original Legend of Zelda. There is also a timer function with a mini-game based on Zelda 2: Adventure of Link. No release date was given, but a little research, it will released on November 12th, 2021.

Finally, he gave us more information on Breath of the Wild 2. We got new footage to see what's happened since the end of the last game. There was a lot of depth to what was shown in the trailer, as well as we were given the release year of 2022. This time, Breath of the Wild 2 will be including the skies. The enemies look to have been teaming up, creating new, terrifying combinations. Link has longer hair and the Sheikah Slate powers look to be enhanced from the previous game. Expanding on the world, taking it upward, is a great way to build on the success of the original Breath of the Wild. Gaining in vertically is a wonderful thing here. We're all curious to see what is going to be coming in the new game.
