Secret of Mana Remake Review

Secret of Mana, second entry of the Mana series, has been one of the most popular games of the series. After a confusing introducing to the world market with the first 2 entries (the very first game begin released in the US under the title Final Fantasy Adventure), things started to clear up and the series starting getting name recognition. This lead to a number of enjoyable or unique games coming out in the series.

Like any remake of a classic game there have been new features added into the Secret of Mana. Beyond the obvious 3D graphics, you will be treated to a rearranged soundtrack, with the option of changing to the original soundtrack. Both are a treat to listen to. They have also revised the magic casting so that multiple people can be casting at the same time. There are also interlude episodes that will have the party interacting with each other more than they did in the original game. Each of the characters now also have a voice. You will have the option to go between the English and Japanese voice cast. This is a fun option to have. This also will feature Auto-Save! In the original it was very easy to get caught up grinding weapon/magic levels and then die to a random encounter that just managed to get lucky. The final feature to be mentioned, and one very welcome, is a Mini-Map feature. The original was easy enough to get around in but especially during that first playthrough, where it was very easy to get lost. Plus any long breaks in playing the game, it was very easy to lose where you were in the story.

Returning features from the Original Game include co-op multiplayer. The names of the characters are also far more prominently featured in the Remake than they were in the original game. The boy is Randi, the girl is Primm, and the sprite is Popoi. The AI controls for the other 2 party members has also be greatly refined. You can have them attack the same enemy your controlled character is, attack the surrounding enemies, use charged attacks and other options.

This game will be coming out on PS4, receiving a limited Physical copy release from a select retail chain, PS Vita, and PC via Steam. Most of the versions will come with limited DLC, mostly costumes that affect your team's appearance with no effect on the actual armor equipped.

If you are lucky and were able to import, there was a Japan-only Collector's edition of the game. This included figurines of the 3 main characters, Randi, Primm and Popoi, a pop-up storybook, the Soundtrack on CD, and a unique collector's box based on the version of the game (PS4 or Vita).
