Looking at the known changes to Fire Emblem Fates

The Fire Emblem series for a long time was supported by just a core fan base. However, after Fire Emblem: Awakening, that audience blossomed. While, in the West, less of the games have come out, they have typically been changed from their original release. These changes have ranged from small to large in size. Fire Emblem Fates is simply the new game in the line up with some changes coming to it that people are not happy about.

The games usually see changes coming over to the West simply because of the cultural differences between the regions. There have been two big instances with Fire Emblem: Fates where this localization process has drawn fire. One thing to be very clear about, Nintendo will not include content in its game that are inappropriate for its audiences. It is this policy which is the main cause. Presently, both of these parts of the game are causing a lot of controversy.

The first instance has been with the “Petting” mini-game. This, Nintendo felt could have been done in a better way and is much more comfortable with its removal. Many have felt the mini-game was sexual because of the blushing and sounds the NPC's would make while playing it. The level of interaction (this being a 3DS game) does contribute some to the animosity that the mini-game has attracted. The mini-game in question seems overall harmless. There is nothing in there overtly sexual. The characters make sounds like giggles or the odd sigh.

When doing this in the full body version which is in the Japanese version, this can provoke comments between the Main Character and that character. This is where it gets more overt. Depending on the Relationship ranking of the characters, the comments can get a bit suggestive.

The second instance has to do with the main protagonist helping one of the various heroes they can meet: Soleil. She is portrayed to be attracted to women. The problem she encounters is that cute girls talking to her can make her faint. It was never outright stated that she was gay (but does indicate she has a preference). With a Male Protagonist, he had the option to use a Magic Powder on her that caused her to perceive other people as the opposite gender. The fact the main character slips it into her drink does not help any.

Here is where things get more tricky. This does help her with her problem of fainting when cute girls talk to her. While working on the problem, Soleil falls for the main character. This lets them propose to her and she has the chance to say “Yes” or “No”. The dialogue makes it clear that it was a choice she made herself.

If you are curious, there are a few places that have the full transcript of the conversation in question. It is a very good idea to read it in full. This gives you a better picture of the course of events. Take your time and do your research to learn more about what is going on. (Link to a Transcription here.)
