Baycon 2015 Recap

Baycon ran this year from May 22nd to the 24th. GameShampoo and Orcz.com were asked to present on a number of panels throughout the convention itself. While most were costuming and cosplay related, we still had our traditional panel at the end of the convention, "Video Games of 2015".

The first panel we were presenting on was "Elevating Your Streetwear To The Highest Level" on Friday. Much like the name implied, this was about how to dress up on a budget. A lot of conversation about where to go to get these articles of clothing and what you could do with your existing wardrobe.

The second panel was Saturday morning: "Duct Tape Creations". Many people around that convention know I can make a lot of things with Duct Tape. This year, they got me in the DIY room, gave me 9 massive rolls of Duct Tape and a lot of people showed up for the panel. I taught them about making a "Sheet of Duct Tape". If you are going to make anything large (like the Top Hat they requested) this is a keystone skill to have. I saw Duct Tape Bracelets, hats, wallets, purses and more appear during this panel.

Panel number three was just after "Duct Tape Creations". This was "Traveling with Costumes and Props". There were quite a few people on this panel but there was not much of a turn-out. This turned more into a round table discussion. Still, learning about traveling with full Stormtrooper Armor from members of the 501st was a wonder. Shipping things to friends or family in the area or a local address is a handy trick. Using flexible materials that won't warp easily is a very good idea for hats. Look for things that let you collapse them to get more into less space.

Panel four was also Saturday. This was "Prop-Making for the Home Handy-Being". This was various panelist talking about their numerous tricks for prop building on a budget. One of the big things was using found items and gluing them onto stuff. A lot of the biggest tricks were something simple. Need to make something like armor? EVA foam is your best bet. Get a cheap Heat Gun (they'll break all so why get an expensive one?). Proper ventilation and protection were also a must. Take your time and prepare, use a respirator whenever you are working with the foam. Also, know what you are working with (unless you are just gluing it on).

The final panel was ours, "The Video Games of 2015". We talked about a number of games: "Assassin's Creed Syndicate", "The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt", "Bloodborne" and "Mario Maker". We had a lot to cover but we managed very well to talk about all of the games and have plenty of discussion about the game. There were a number of give aways for this panel. There were two t-shirts, both from San Diego Comic Con 2014: one for Assassin's Creed Unity and one for Super Smash Bros on Wiiu/3DS. A number of rare posters were given away including the Shock Jockey Elixir poster from Bioshock Infinite we had that was signed by the developers.

It was a good year with great turn outs for all of the panels. We hope to return to the Convention next year and meet many people who read our work.
