San Diego Comic Con 2014 - The Next Mass Effect

This panel had  Mike Gamble, the Producer, Noel Lukasewich, Environmentalist, Carl Boulay, Lead Animator, Jessica Merizan, Lead Community Team and Moderator, and Philip Farte, Moderator from the Nerdist.

The first thing Mike talked about was the general challenge presented by working with the Team in Montreal. It is largely a challenge of coordinating because of the time different. This does involve a lot of flights to get face time to keep everyone on the same page. This is very important to keep everyone working together because of the vast amount of content that is needed for this game. They also wanted to be sure that choice was prominent in the game as well.

The panelist talked about just what they were looking at for the next entry into the Mass Effect. The biggest challenge is just measuring up. They wanted to make a new experience and create a spiritual successor to the original Mass Effect series. They wouldn't give any information on where in the Mass Effect timeline this story would be taking place.

Mike then talked about Fact Checking. he joked about having made good use of the Mass Effect wiki. He then talking about the Writing Team they have devoted to the lore of the Mass Effect universe. They also talk about the scientific fact checking that they have in place.

Carl talked some about using the Frostbite engine for the game. It had opened up a vast number of options beyond what the Unreal engine used for the original trilogy. This has vastly increased the rendering abilities that the teams have at their disposal. This increased what the environments could be and improved a great number of things about the game.

One thing they showed which was greatly improved was the Mako. This ground vehicle has had a massive overhaul from when it was last seen. It showed itself to be have been remade into a very agile vehicle. It still has its jump ability but there is a lot more that it can do even if hasn't outright been said just yet. It has shown itself to be at least a 4 person vehicle and more than agile enough to handle far more diverse terrain than the iterations we've seen so far.

The multiplayer does look to be making a return. For the original game, it offered a challenge as they had to build the infrastructure for it. They want to have it compliment the single player and add to the experience as a whole. They also want it to be more cooperative than competitive. It is one of the things that Mass Effect keeps at its core.

The Armor looks to have taken a different turn. This will be offering a very customizable appearance for everyone's loadout. They are making it more modular than it was previously. This will also give you a greater level of control over the casual wear as well. You won't have to run around in a crash helmet the whole time. This is a nice change from what we had experienced in the previous titles.

Unfortunately, no details have been released about if you will be able to play as anything aside from human. The armor has changed as mentioned. While we weren't able to see anything about the character models, it was apparent there was a greater difference between the genders in their armor.

Mass Effect has been an amazing series with an epic story. It is a hard act to follow but this looks like there is something coming that can uphold the legacy. This is a game to keep an eye out for. It is going to be a while but it is going to be well worth the wait.
