Wait until you see the hero and his girl sitting on a tree (after the Title screen), then hold the L Button, Right, and X, and press Start twice.

Reset Opponents
There are several locations in the game where your character may face a group of opponents without a weapon. If time allows, simply move back to the left until the opponents disappear. Then move to the right to resume without threat.
