Match Day |
If you want to be able to influence the action on the field, you have to watch every match. You can then make tactical
substitutions and formation changes to suit the current situation. For example, if you're one up with not long to go, you
may want to shore up your defence; or if you badly need an equaliser, push men forward. You may also want to replace
a booked or injured player, or alter your formation after a sending-off.
In particular, watch the Territory meter and the Shot count for each team: if the opposition is getting more shots in, that's
a bad sign! Of course, results sometimes go against the run of play, but if you're getting twice as many shots in as your
opponents, you should be onto a winner.
Always look at your players' ratings after the match, to see how they performed. Take a note of any poor performances
so you can possibly replace that player in the next match, or single them out for training. |

Team Tactics |
Obviously Brian, your match tactics depend on the opposition, so always have a look at their statistics and formation
first. At the end of the day, it's up to your personal preference exactly what style you play, but here are a few general
pointers. |

Cheap Contract Renewal |
When you need to renew your contracts, go to contracts, click on the player to renew, increase his wage by ?50,
Then add on then years. If done correctly, he will accept the new terms. This may be done with any player. |

Defensive Counterattack |
If you're up against a superior team, the only option is to get men behind the ball. That means a 5-4-1 formation. Use a
Sweeper system, set tackling to Medium or Hard, choose a Counter Attack passing style, and Defensive overall style. |

Free Money |
A good managerial tactic if you have a club with a small ground is to look out for the players who are free on the
Bosman ruling. They will still have a transfer value shown next to them even though they are free (this is basically an
indicator to show how much they will be worth once they have been offered a contract). So no matter how good or
poor the player is, just buy the ones with a decent value and then place them straight on the transfer list. This allows you
to make money from nowhere. |

Long Ball Merchant |
The 'route one' tactic can be used to bombard the opposition's half with long balls. As you'll be bypassing the midfield
(and the need for any passing skill), you can reduce it to shore up the defence and/or put an extra striker up front. Here's
a typical setup: 5-2-3, Zonal defence, Medium tackling, Long Ball passing, Orthodox style. |

Dodgy Dealing |
Although Premier Manager '98 doesn't let you exchange brown envelopes in motorway service stations, there are still ways you can con the system. Many thanks to Carl Sampson of Barnsley for these underhand tactics. |

Other People's Money |
There's another variation of the above trick. On the Transfers screen, select one of your three dummy teams by clicking
in the top left corner. Then buy a player from the list with that team's money . Make a generous offer (hey, it's not your
money!), then select Next Game from the main menu and he should join you.
You can then use 'The Free Transfers Scam' to move that player to your real team. As before, offer nothing, then set the
player's weekly wage to ?0, contract to ten years, and bonus to none. Finalise the offer and accept it. Once again you've
swindled one of your three dummy teams. Repeat this process to add even more great players (including international
ones) to your squad. |

Team Nobbling |
Another way to use the Free Transfers Scam (see above) to your advantage is that whenever your come up against one
of your three dummy teams, you can muck up their formations and players to make them easy opponents. Replace any
good players they've got left (since you pilfered their stars!) with the reserves - or even buy rubbish players specially for
them. Put them in all the wrong team positions, just to make sure, then use an attacking formation. This should ensure
victory for your real team. |

General Tips |
What A Great Save
Save your game regularly: it's the classic safeguard of any football management game. That way, if you happen to lose an
important match, you can simply reload your position, alter your tactics, and play it again if only Glenn Hoddle had
used this trick.
Note that you need a whole 15 blocks to save your game, so make sure you've got a blank memory card before you
start - a friend of Adam's had been playing over three hours when he realised he'd have to rush out and buy another
memory card! |

Training Ground |
Look carefully at the player Statistics, noting deficiencies in key areas for each position; eg tackling for defenders,
shooting for attackers. Then set the relevant training to increase them. Use Fitness training to improve low fitness - but
also take that player out of the numbered 16 squad members. |

Dead Wood |
If you have the Ageing option on, get rid of any old duffers to start with - while you can still get anything for them. Keep
your most promising youngsters as they'll improve with time and training. |

Cover Me |
Make sure you have decent reserve players for every position, so you can replace any injured team-mates - and rest
unfit players. Injuries can become a real problem later in the season, so put plenty of funding (about 20%) into your
Medical staff. You don't want to have to be forced into changing your formation and tactics it can totally ruin your
Season. |

Safe Hands |
One of the best investments you can make is a good goalkeeper. They're worth their weight in gold so buy one as soon
as you can. Also, try to improve your defence, as this is the foundation of any good team. |

Player Reincarnation |
This trick works with the Ageing option turned on. When you start the game, go to the financial screen and pool all your
resources into your youth team so it's up to 70%. Now, when one of your older players retires, he'll be regenerated as a
youth player with the same statistics and wage demands.
Keep a lookout on the transfer list for old players (35 or over) with a decent rating (3.5 stars and over) to buy. Because
of their age, their wage demands will be fairly low, so once they've retired and been reincarnated as youth players you
won't have to pay them much. |

Winging It |
If you want to use a couple of fast wingers to best effect, select a total of five midfielders. Choose a 3-5-2 or 4-5-1
formation and push them wide with a Passing Game style. We recommend Zonal defence, Medium tackling, and
Orthodox overall style. |

All Out Attack |
This strategy will give you loads of scoring opportunities during a match, although it might leave you vulnerable at the
other end. Select a 3-4-3 (or 3-5-2) formation, Long Ball passing style, and Attacking overall style to pepper the
opposition's goal. It's particularly useful if you urgently need an equaliser. |
