for a working house it has to be wood or bricks or its not considered suitable for npcs

Actually, I made a hobbit hole(a home made from dirt), with one chair, a table and a torch, and I was able to designate the guide and the merchant to their rooms respectively.

Edit: So, to answer, you probably can. I'd test it out first, by making a control home, and trying to move someone into it.
