How do i acquire equipable items in Team Fortress 2?

You can acquire them via "random drops" which drop items accoring do your playtime    using a very, VERY COMPLICATED equation, so the more you play the more items you will get.

you can also get items from buying them from the Mann Co. store. A store inside TF2 where you can buy items such as hats, weapons and paints by using real money from the "Steam Wallet"

You can also get items from pre order bonuses from purchasing games from the steam store.

You can get items from completing various milestones within a class, which are earned by completing several achievements for that class. there are 3 milestones per class.

In additon, you can "craft" items from scrap metal, refined metal, or reclaimed metal, which is created from "breaking down items" this can be very costly because breaking down 2 weapons gives you only 1 scrap metal, 3 of which is needed to create refined metals, and 3 of those are needed to create a refined metal. I would not suggest crafting  until you have played a long time and stocked up on extra items.

You can also get items from Mann Co. Crates, these crates are also random drops but require a key (purchased from the Mann. Co. Store) to open it, revealing somewhat rare items, and if you're lucky an ultra rare item. such as a glowing hat

Lastly, you can acquire items through trading with other players. so if you have a friend who has an extra item that they dont need you can ask them to give it to you for free, but usually you will have to have something of you own to trade as well, people just arent very nice people sometimes haha
