it really depends on the mod, a lot of mods require other mods, but, for example if you wanted to install the Pistons mod (http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=1032&t=247686) you would need to first install the ModLoader (found in the installation instructions on the forum post).

It varies from mod to mod though, my recommendation is to visit the Released Mods section of minecraftforum.net (the official minecraft forum), find the mod you want to install, find instructions for that specific mod, and follow them. I don't have much experience with mod's but I would imagine it is a similar process to texture packs, using a patching application (or just copying files into your folder) to install the mod into your minecraft.

Hope that helps! good luck!

I'd recommend installing a mod manager or loader like "MyCraft Mod Manager" or "ModLoader".

Be careful with mods though, they can be dangerous if downloaded from unreliable sources.

Download a modloader (google Minecraft Modloader)

and download the mods (which are zipped with winrar or 7zip)

then load em up and click start modding, install all mods, and finish modding, and kabooom.

You have your mod./

Most of the mods are installed by putting the mod files in

C:\Users\<PCUSERNAME>\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft

folder

or in the minecraft.jar file that is located in

C:\Users\<PCUSERNAME>\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft\bin

to open it use your 2nd mouse button and use open with... then choose winrar or 7zip.

The easyest way to get to the minecraft folder is to press start ->run and type %appdata% then press ok and you PC should open up the roaming dirrectory, the first folder that you see should be .minecraft

Most of the mods also include a readme.txt file that explains how to install it.

Individual mods have their own unique installation methods. It's really messy at the moment, since mods aren't fully supported. So, until Notch makes modding easier, you're best off downloading the mods you want, and following the instructions they include in the package or on the website. If they don't have instructions, their mod probably isn't worth the time; if they can't put the effort into making instructions, who knows what other corners they cut.

The one thing you must always remember about mods, however, is to make a backup of your save files. Always, always, always.
