Smelt a Wood block (The wood you would get off of the tree, not the wood you craft from that. The tree trunk block) in the furnace. It will produce 1 Charcoal per 1 Wood.

I'm pretty sure you mine charcoal. It's often found in and on the sides of mountains. I would make a stone pickaxe before trying to harvest them, first.

You place a wooden block into a smelter. The result is charcoal.

You take logs not planks but plain logs and burn them in the furnace 1 log = 1 charcoal so if using 1 coal you burned 8 logs you got 8 charcoal for one coal
