In dwarf fortress, I've never been attacked by goblins or anything. Is this normal?

I've played upwards of 5+ hours in one fortress and have never been attacked. Is this normal?

 

Do I have to make my fortress super close to a goblin encampment?

I don't think this should happen. I have never. I mean ever played more than an hour without being attacked. Just try moving close to a Goblin Camp and watch. Then again, it could be a computer error.

I've played two fortresses and this has happened twice. Rodents come in to try and steal stuff but no one ever is violent against me.
