how can you pick up the mob spawner in minecraft?

You cannot anymore. You used to be able to, but now it only vanishes when destroyed. You can give yourself the Mob Spawner, however, through various mods such as More Items.

Also you can get Pig Spawner to your invetory using InvEdit :)
