how do you save someone with the microphone in rock band?

With any instument you gotta go in to overdrive.  With the mic you go into overdrive when you accumulate the overdrive meter and randomly sing during the overdrive activation sections ^^

You must activate overdrive by singing when the notes are golden, or there is a golden box. Unfortunately, you can't activate this on queue. Instead you have to wait for it, so saving bandmates comes down to luck.

You have to hit overdrive, which you can usually hit inbetween verses.  You also have to have your over drive meter at least half full.
