sims 3 generations why wont my toddler get an imaginary friend?

it depends if you ADOPTED your child or BIRTHED that child.When i adopted my child didnt get a imaginary friend but when i had one natuarallly this thing popped up saying an old relative gave my child her toy.Hoped this helped and have a great life!!!!
