Technically it doesn't cost anything. You simply download the server launcher from here: http://www.minecraft.net/download.jsp and set it up on your own PC.

I would only recomend this for personal use, though.

The price of a server varies depending on how you set it up. You could even turn an old PC into a minecraft server if you really wanted to.

16 slot for $15 a month.

1 gig VPS for $9.99 per month.

Or use your own PC as a server to save costs.

It depends which provider you choose. The bigger the server, the more it will cost.

I know someone who hosts a 50 player dedicated minecraft server for about $150 per month.

My friend runs his own server off of a computer mainly put together from all of our spare parts, we can have about 8-10 people on it without any issues.

Setting up a Minecraft server is free of charge. You just download the server tools from the Minecraft site, put the right settings and you are done.

Anywhere from free to 30$ a month. Free if you run it off of your router with the right programs. And $30 per month for someone else to run it, but you are in control.
