How do you duplicate items in Final fantasy 7 using W-Item materia?

First equip the W-item materia and use it during a battle then you select the item you want to duplicate then you select a target, once the item menu appears select another item close the menu. So it will be best to look for weaker enemies that cannot possibly beat you and start the process. Of course this can only be used for items that can be selected and used during the battle only.
