Are you using a multiplayer or singleplayer game? If it is a multiplayer, simply find the persons IP adress (if the person does not know their IP, tell them to type 'IP' into Google, it will tell them what it is), and enter it into the IP adress slot that comes up when you press 'Add Server' or 'Direct Connect'.

If it singleplayer though, you will need to have a computer on the same IP adress as the one with the world you are trying to join. The person will have to hit the 'ESC' button, and click the button on the screen that says 'Open to LAN'. You then can go to multiplayer, and at the bottom of your multiplayer server list, the world will pop up. Simply click to join it. (Although I've noticed with the latest update to Minecraft, LAN dosen't seem to work properly.)
