Yes you should. the story line might not make much sense if you didn't play portal 1. Buy the XBLA game off of live. (Portal: Still Alive + its only 600 MSP)

Just start with portal 2. It's supposed to be improved. Portal 1 is just the teaser and not much in terms of story.

 

But then again, you get Portal 1 for FREE if you buy Portal 2 before it launch so it won't hurt to play it first.

you should, it's amazing and will give you an introduction to the kind of critical thinking that will be prevalent in portal 2. plus you can pick it up for pretty cheap right now, or if you order it off of steam you get a free copy of it. if you don't play it you'll miss out on all the awesome dialog from glados, but storywise it's not really neccessary.

YES DEFINITELY! Portal 1 was already amazing, and you need the background of the style of gameplay, thinking and getting used to portals before Portal 2. Plus its funny as hell.

It's not 100% neccessary (well that happens with any game anyway, you could still play it and not understand jackshit), but it's advisable, because you may be lost during the game, and also because it's awesome.

You don't HAVE to, but you should do it. It's a great, worthwhile story. I'm sure it will be just as fun for you to play Portal 1 for the first time as it will be for others to play #2 for the first time. Then, when you get started on the sequel you'll have a lot more fun. You'll get all the jokes and the storyline will make a lot more sense.

I would suggest playing it. Portal 1 had a great story and wasnt especially lengthy. You can probably be done before you see any spoilers for Portal 2.

Since Portal 2 is meant to be designed to be a standalone game, you are still able to play Portal 2 with out having played Portal 1 at all and still enjoy it. I however, would not recommend this because Portal 1 is an amazing game that actually has a bit of story to it, mostly towards the last half of the game. It's a great game that everyone should play, and you might even be able to pick an extra copy up from one of your friends.

YES. Portal 1 wasn't expected to do a lot of sucess, but the outstanding game desgin, puzzles, humour and voice acting made it one of best games of 2007, plus, it's very short and if you are used to the mechanics of the game, Portal 2 will be a lot easier.

Just play the first one first! It'll make so much more sence and it isnt that long anyway, just think, if you dont play the first one first, it'll be like walking in on half a movie, how shit would that be? And then you'll regret not playing it first, the series so far is that good thats there is no doubt that its worth playing together.. Do it!..
