how do you get better equipment then gold in terraria

You go in the Corruption and you look for small spheres and break them with a gold hammer or so and a meteor drops out of the sky and you have to locate it on the map and it gives you about 2 stacks of ore which is like 50 bars and you do that a couple of times and you go to an anvil and make yer armorrrr
