what does it mean when you try to get on a multiplayer sever in minecraft and it says you are not white listed?

some servers a private, so they have what you call a 'white list'. The server owner can allow certain accounts to be on said white list. Unfortunately, if you are not white listed on a server with a white list, there is no way to go on that server.
