is mage a fun class in Rift?

Absolutely, all the class combinations in Rift are entertaining. Ask yourself 'would I rather be up front, in their face or would you rather sit back and cast"?.

If you enjoy setting things on fire, freezing, calling forth the dead to aid you in battle, and completely destroying anything in your path;  Than yes.

 

If you don't enjoy all of the above, than you should probably go cleric.

To me, I'd be a mage, especially because Mages here are better than WoW in every fashion :]
