on sims 3 generations if i send my kids to boarding school can they visit family over the weekends?

I have the game, and it appears that they don't visit over the weekends. They're seemingly completely gone until they age up or graduate.

I have the game and I know that the teenager can go anytime during being a teenager and come back when they want to.(you can do this by phone). Family dont visit at weekends, the teen just goes untill they age up. Bare in mind though , each time that the teen goes, they have to pay!
