Lord of the Rings and Dungeons and Dragons are both solid choices. They are professionally run, and were once pay to play. The servers are incredibly good, and the game play was seriously designed.

However, the free account is limited content-wise. Check each of the respective sites for what aspects oft he game are limited.

I like to play Mabinogi, it's a great free to play MMORPG with some items that you can buy. There's a bunch of quests and events that the game's owners, Nexon, run. I would recommend this game for anyone who loves RPG games or especially MMORPG games.
