Ideally you would need 8 square feet of open space but it will work with slightly less, best thing to do is move furniture etc to maximise your playing space, hope this helps.

It seems that the instructions require a bare minimum of 6 feet between you and the Kinect. However, it's been recomended that you clear up to 8-10 feet between you and the Kinect. This supposedly increases the accuracy of the Kinect camera.
Once you have the distance, the rest should be easy. You basically just need as much room as you're comfortable with. There will be lots of movement, so just make sure you have a comfortable space surrounding you.

They say you need 6 foot, you can okay around with this a little, perhaps go for a 5ft 5 space, but anymore than that you'll probably be hitting into things.

You don't need too much space, but the general rule is the more the better. If you have enough space to stand about 5 feet away from the sensor/tv and can do jumping jacks, then you probably play the kinect single player no problem. You will need more space if you want to play multiplayer.
