The interesting thing about Dragon Age 2, is actually the rivalry system. You can have people on your team that dont' agree with you, but support your overall goal. This can be risky, however, because rivalries may end up stabbing you in the back later on, or out right leaving your party to persue other means to reaching the goal. this keeps things interesting.

Friendships, however, work just as you'd expect. They support your cause and methods. Also, friendship helps for romancing.
