How do you attract animals in minecraft?

I have so much trouble finding animals, especially on survival mode. I want to know how to attract them easily. I have tried MULTIPLE things MULTIPLE times. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

Try using some wheat. Equiped it and then go up to the animal as close as possible then it should follow you
