The circle pad moves Pit around the screen, touching the screen aims and the L trigger fires. Holding down the L trigger lets you shoot rapid fire.

This has been said to be the control scheme that 'shows other games how it's done'

And later described as a "love it or hate it" control scheme. It should also be said that there is no left handed option.
